\section{براوردگرهای کلاسیک}
به فرایندی که در آن نتایج حاصل از نمونه برای براورد پارامتری از جامعه یا نتیجه‌گیری در مورد ویژگی خاصی از جامعه استفاده می‌شود، استنباط آماری گویند. دو مسئله‌ی مهم در استنباط آماری، براورد و آزمون فرض می‌باشد.

مسئله براورد در بسیاری از زمینه‌ها کاربرد پیدا می‌کند؛ به عنوان مثال ممکن است در یک مطالعه‌ی اقتصادی تمایل داشته باشیم متوسط هزینه‌ی مصرفی خانواده‌های ساکن در یک شهر را بدانیم. برای این کار می‌توان نمونه‌ای از خانوارها را انتخاب کرد و متوسط هزینه در هر ماه آن‌ها را محاسبه نمود و این عدد را به عنوان متوسط هزینه مصرفی کلیه‌ی خانوارهای ساکن در آن شهر در هر ماه مورد توجه قرار داد.
